Unique Product Identifier

A standardized identifier for over-the-counter derivatives products under global regulatory frameworks.

UPIs were developed as part of the G20 derivatives market reforms to provide consistent identification of OTC derivatives products across jurisdictions. The system creates unique identifiers for derivatives based on their economic terms rather than individual contracts, enabling better market oversight and risk assessment. UPIs support the aggregation of derivatives data across different trade repositories and regulatory regimes. The identifier structure reflects key economic attributes of the derivative product, including underlying asset, contract type, and critical terms. UPIs are essential for regulatory reporting under various regimes including EMIR, Dodd-Frank, and other derivatives regulations worldwide.
